What sort becomes a
pastor? A minister in Paul's early life must have saw something when
he asked Paul about the Ministry. Paul Becker Jr. cleaning a lawn mower
after performing yard work told this preacher he didn't like the idea of
"living in a fish bowl". There was a time when he never fathomed he would
ever enter the Ministry.
An earlier incident might
have suggested just the opposite. As a young lad, he and his chums on
their bikes were tormented by stinging pains to different parts of their
bodies. Later the cause of their discomfort became apparent. Another lad
was up in a tree house assuming the role of a sniper with his BB rifle.
With adrenalin coursing through his body, Paul rushed the sniper's
position, climbed the tree blocking any escape and grabbed the afflicting
implement from the perpetrator's hands and cast it through the air where
the gun was dashed upon a rock. He then turned his agitated attention to
the user of the apparatus and said to him: " Don't do that anymore!", and
left. As it is written of old, "Hate the sin but love the sinner."
Some of these traits may
have been passed on to Paul's five year old daughter Lydia who stood up
for a fellow teammate whose fielded ball was taken away by another
teammate. Lydia witnessed the theft and voiced well her displeasure
to the offender and to her proud father's approval! She later explained to
him: "He stealed it".
Reverend Paul Becker,
Jr.'s time as Interim Associate Pastor for First Church has been as
dedicated as a regular Senior Pastor during the time he has manned the
helm as our sole pastor. His faith has endured the sad death of his first
wife but with the strength and love he and his sons have found with
Marlene and their youngest child, he has found more hope and meaning which
he passes on to the parish. He has laughed with us and challenged us and
counseled us. He is a teacher and enabler and has conducted God's work
here helping hold together an anxious congregation. We wish him and his
family the very best with their continued Holy assignment in
Bakerstown.
