Red Doors
I have
also heard many explanations for the red doors but can actually say I was
there when the decision was made. The person who made the recommendation to
paint them red was an elder named Charles Creighton. He and his wife lived
on Pennsylvania Avenue (just after the Pa. Avenue School) and he served as
chairman for the property committee in the early 70's.
Charles and his wife returned from a
vacation in New England where they noticed several churches had red doors.
He asked me about it and the only explanation I had was what I learned in
Seminary. Red is the color which symbolizes the Holy Spirit and red doors
serve as a welcome for folks to come into God's house and be filled with His
Spirit.
The session accepted his recommendation
and he personally paid for the paint. The sexton at that time, Wilbur
Dudley, who lives in Penglyn with his wife, across the street from the
Daughertys, applied the paint. Since that time the church doors have been
repainted as needed by volunteers or employees of the church.
