South Sudan is divided into ten states which correspond to three historical regions of the Sudan: Bahr el Ghazal, Equatoria, and Greater Upper Nile.

* Contains the national capital city of Juba

The states have been assigned to specific religious denominations. The Greater Upper Nile states are Presbyterian while to the west the states in the Bahr el Ghazal are Episcopalian. The three states to the south in the Equatoria region closest to the equator are Catholic.

The ten states from all three regioins are further subdivided into 86 counties.
