Top of the World

hymn - a song in praise or honor of God...
         - Webster's New World Dictionary Third College Edition

This Carpenter's song would not come to most people's mind as a hymn. It does have an inspirational history. Touted as a song from one lover to another it realized a different context in the life of a particular preacher. At a low point in what was happening in his life at the time, this song came on the radio. Instead of confirmatory love to a significant other, in the minister's mind it became a tribute and profession of faith to the ultimate Significant Other. It was so uplifting an experience, this pastor decided to play it to his parish at Sunday service after telling his story so that they too could interpret and experience it as a born again inspirational song praising God.

Top of the World
Lyrics by John Bettis
Music by Richard Carpenter

Such a feeling's coming over me
There is wonder in most everything I see
Not a cloud in the sky, got the sun in my eyes
and I won't be surprised if it's a dream.

Everything I want the world to be
Is now coming true especially for me
And the reason is clear, its because you are here
You're the nearest thing to heaven that I've seen.

Kathleen Krater pencil drawing of boy in horizontally striped shirt and dark pants hands on hips determined contemplative expression on his face as he literally is standing on top of the world.

I'm on the top of the world looking down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I found ever since you been around
Your love's put me at the top of the world.

Something in the wind has learned my name
And it's telling me that things are not the same
In the leaves on the trees and the touch of the breeze
There's a pleasing sense of happiness for me.

There is only one wish on my mind
When this day is through I hope that I will find
That tomorrow will be just the same for you and me
All I need will be mine if you are here.
